A selection of chapters from On & Off The Gringo Trail: Part One
It is a truth universally acknowledged—though rarely admitted aloud—that no one has ever arrived in Patagonia fully prepared. I certainly didn’t. Within minutes it became apparent that I was, in the most technical sense, catastrophically out of my depth. My only real strategy was to place all remaining hope in my best friend, who—while only marginally more competent—possessed a reassuring ability to look confident in the face of doom as I simply attempted not to die. Together we stumbled into winds that could politely be described as “hostile,” hoping we might survive long enough to emerge from the far end of Patagonia more or less intact.
