Top 8 Ways To Create A Cheap Home Gym

This top 8 list is perfect for those who hate the gym but still want to get in a great weight loss workout in the comfort and privacy of your own home.

Why only 8? Well # 8 was my favourite position back when I played rugby so I guess I have an affinity for that number!

The items that you are going to find in this list will set you back less than $100 each, some even have a very low investment of under $10.

All of the top 8 are perfect additions for any home exercise training routine.

1) Kettlebells
Without a doubt my favourite workout implement. If I had to chose just one piece of equipment to get a workout in with it would be a kettlebell.

Beginners usually are recommended to start off with a 12kg kettlebell for women or a 16kg kettlebell for the fellas. This is provided you can master exercises using your own bodyweight first like a simple squat or waiters bow (precursor to a deadlift) with correct form.

Kettlebells are a great way to get an alternative form of cardio in and it is what I have based my Aussie Fatblast home gym workout routine on (although you are not limited to using these exclusively – dumbbells or even sandbags will work just as good).

I have got kettlebells here in Aus from a couple of places but my preference is for Kettlebell Kingdom. The 12kg retails for approx $60 and 16kg approx $70 plus postage.

2) Skipping Rope
These are a really cheap investment and are going to set you back a couple of bucks tops.

Perfect for getting your heart rate up and building your co-ordination. If you cannot master the co-ordination yet, start with virtual skipping (just skipping without a rope) and work you way up to the real deal.

3) Sandbags
This is the ultimate bargain workout implement. Back when I was first starting my business and was on very limited funds, I used sandbags to provide the weights resistance and it’s not as silly as it seems.

I used to buy the sand from a local sand and soil place in 30kg lots for $5 and buy a couple of empty bags off them for a $1 each, some electrical tape for less than $5 a roll and make up my own sandbag.

Cheap and effective. Sure they can leak over time but you just make some running repairs and you’re on your way again.

The best thing about these, apart from their low cost, is that the sand shifts around inside the bag as you are lifting it – which in turn increases the intensity of an exercise as you will require a lot more muscles switching on than you normally would if you used a fixed weight.

Just another reason to give them a go.

This is a sandbag I made years ago.

4) Resistance Tubing
These are an under utilised piece of workout equipment when setting up a home gym. However, any decent Personal Trainer has them as part of their secret arsenal.

They provide a lot more of a resistance than what you think they would when looking at them and the resistance can range from the light end to the super heavy duty ones. You can also increase the intensity of the workout by standing further away from the tubes.

They are so cheap and are a must for variety to your home exercise routine. I couldn’t find an online site here in Aus (the place I got them from doesn’t seem to have them anymore but you can find them here – it’s an American site by the looks of it.

5) Foam Roller (Also known as Physio Roller)
These things are an absolute must have for any person serious about their training. The best way to describe these is like having a masseuse on call.

I like to use this as my preferred method of cooling down after a workout rather than the traditional static stretches and also whenever I feel like I’ve been sitting at a computer for too long and my shoulders and back tense up.

I only get mine from AOK Health. Make sure you get the long roller and the round one – not the half version – as the half version won’t roll with you.

You can get an idea in this video below showing you how to use it correctly

At present these retail for about $50 (cheaper than they used to be!) and AOK can be found here.

6) Fitball or Swissball
While I don’t endorse doing crunches or sit ups, there are a 101 other things you can use these for.

First and foremost I like to use it as a chair in my office – it is much better for your posture as it is very hard to slouch while sitting on one!

Otherwise they are great for increasing the intensity of push ups – incline or decline and with your hands or feet on the ball, doing hovers/planks on and also giving your lower back a great workout with some trunk extensions.

Once again, I only use AOK balls – they should give me a share the company with the amount of sales I drive their way for free!

7) Stopwatch
This is essential to keep a track on your rest times and also your workout sets if your workout routine calls for timed exercises and also for your interval training routines if you are doing stuff like tabatas or any other timed effort.

A decent stopwatch keeps you honest and ensures you don’t get distracted and take longer rest periods than what you should honestly be taking.

These can range from a couple of bucks up to $50 and upwards for one where you can program your own interval times.

I’ve tried the gymboss stopwatch but wasn’t happy when it broke after less than a month of using it so my tip is to shop elsewhere.

Great tips on exercising on the cheap at home. My only addition would be a good stereo. I find exercising to music so much more motivating!

A stereo is a great tip Kellie! I agree that exercising to tunes is a great way to pump you up – either that or just being in the great outdoors I find agrees with me
