If you are not from this neck of the woods, you may have been unaware that yesterday was Australia Day – one of my favourite public holidays all year. Probably the only public holiday that beats it is ANZAC Day (because of the significance of the diggers sacrifice for what we have today).
So, I thought I’d go away from our usual weight loss tips on here to bring you my top 5 reasons why I love Australia Day.
#1) You get to do what Aussies do best – hang out with your mates and enjoy a bbq and a beer:
What better way to spend a hot summers day then the way I spent it yesterday – catching up with my mates, spending half the day in the swimming pool and enjoying a few quiet beers.
Of course we had the traditional Aussie bbq for lunch although I broke with tradition to have lamb and enjoyed a beautiful fresh salmon and salad.
It had been a while since I’d had a good catch up with some of my old school mates so what better time to do so than on our national day.
#2) Getting a day off
Aussies love nothing more than having a day off during the week when you should really be working. I definitely didn’t miss my 4:40am usual wake up call.
#3) It’s Summertime
Sure, we had a 40 degree day where I was at my mates house yesterday and sure it was hot, but it’s much better than being on the other side of the world right now where they’re in the middle of mad snow storms and freezing! Beers, bbqs and good people are the perfect fit for summertime.
#4) It reminds you that we’re living in the best country in the world
I heard a thing on the tv the other night where a journalist was saying that you can’t go around saying that this is the best country in the world because there’s so many other countries out there with great bits about them.
Well I disagree. I love travelling but each time I come home I’m thankful that we do indeed live in the best country in the world.
We have great climate year round, great people, beaches, sights that people travel half way around the world to see, cold beer, a love of bbqs with family and friends and for a small population we bat well above our average when it comes to sports.
#5) The cricket & Tennis is on
Another Aussie Day tradition is the cricket one dayer at the Adelaide oval where we play whoevers in town and also the Australian Open is on down in Melbourne. Makes for a great sporting day with the tv on in the background at your function.
I could go on and on but as you can see I love being Australian and I love Australia Day. I’m grateful to be living in such an awesome place.
