Alright I can’t take this any longer.
You may have read in some of my previous posts about my disdain for a well-known nutritionist who has a weekly column in one of the Sunday papers.
One of her ‘tips’, and I use that word loosely, was so bad that I’ve decided to start a new healthy eating myths set straight column where I’ll name and shame her latest wondertip as a total health farce.
This weeks golden pearl of wisdom (I’m hoping you can sense my sarcasm) was part of the 10 biggest dieting mistakes post.
Did you know that too much fruit is supposedly a big dieting mistake?
Since When?
I’ve never known too much fruit to make someone fat and I’ve been training people for 10 years.
The problem in the western world today is that people don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables and here we have a supposedly respected nutritionist telling people don’t eat too much fruit.
Please.
To be honest people wouldn’t have a problem with all the sugar that fruit has if they didn’t follow her other pearls of wisdom like snacking on veggie crackers and nut bars instead of real foods like carrot sticks with hommus and a handful of nuts. Even through a small portion of Greek Yoghurt into the mix.
Now repeat after me.
Fruit will not make you fat!
Repeat it as many times as it needs to sink in that fruit is not bad. It is an essential part of your weight loss success and general health and wellbeing.
It’s the other rubbish that people eat with it. It is also a problem when people think they can get their fruit content through fruit juices which are just processed garbage.
One more thing I want to address in this post – another article in the same pull out on the weekend was by former swimming great Libby Trickett (Lenton for most of her swimming days).
I have a lot of respect for Libby as a swimmer but she shouldn’t be giving diet tips to unsuspecting readers.
Especially when her top 5 snack foods include snack bars, rice crackers and protein shakes.
Not exactly what the average Jane needs to hear she should be eating to lose weight.
These foods are great for athletes in training. Not for people looking for weight loss tips.
Okay, Daniel, take a big deep breath and relax…

I must have read the same articles as you. i’ve actually seen a couple of times ‘experts’ have said limit fruit to 1-2 peices a day. no wonder people have such screwed up views on eating!!!
i used to get so confused about food, reading in health mags that a certain food was ‘bad’ yet it would feature on their recommended eating plans! i learnt from my old personal trainer the simple fact that the food we eat should be all natural whole food, and no processed crap.. pretty simple really!!
thanks i look forward to reading more of these posts!!!
thanks Kylie! I must admit reading that section each Sunday gives me more laughs than reading the comics. Fortunately fat loss doesn\’t have to be rocket science – even with these clowns clouding peoples ideas
