Today I’m going to be a bit serious and speak about a topic that more often than not gets swept under the carpet when it should definitely be something that is not to be ashamed about.
It came to light in the media yesterday that Gold Logie Winner Rebecca Gibney suffered depression for the best part of 25 years up until the birth of her son 5 years ago.
Wow.
It just goes to show that you don’t know who gets dragged down by the “black dog” as it’s known. For someone who seemed to be a happy and much loved person on camera to battling her inner demons caused by a rough upbringing, you never would have known.
Hopefully by Rebecca speaking out and raising the awareness that it is okay to have depression and that you can emerge from your darkest days will help others realise that they too can experience better days ahead.
Rebecca looked deadset awesome the other night and I can say that like Michelle Obama, you inspire women over 40 to realise that they can look glamorous and feel fabulous.
I must confess that I’ve always been a bit of a fan of Rebecca even going back to the days when she was in the Flying Doctors in the 80′s and she looks just as good, if not better, today as her appearance on the red carpet showed on Sunday night.
At some stage or another most people know of someone who has battled depression to some degree. I think it is important that people talk about what they feel and realise that they don’t have to be alone.
So the message today is simple but serious. If you need help, speak out. There will always be someone who can be there just to chat. Whether it be seeing a professional or just confiding in a trusted friend or family member a problem shared is a problem halved as I once heard.
